Well it is the height of summer and trips are on everyone’s minds. As I thought about summer trips something came to me, the importance of a companion on your trip. As most of my thoughts do it quickly lead me to find out what the word companion means. So, I looked up the word online. The results of my research follow:
Main Entry: companion
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English compainoun, from Old French compagnon, from Late Latin companion-, companio, from Latin com- + panis bread, food --
1 : one that accompanies another : COMRADE, ASSOCIATE;
also : one that keeps company with another
3 a : one that is closely connected with something similar
b : one employed to live with and serve another
Most likely if you are reading this, you consider God to be your leader, Jesus to be your savior, and the Holy Spirit to be your guide and support, however I was thinking that many times you may be like me and we forget to see God as our companion. Let me explain my thoughts a bit.
Sure God is our leader, He is the one with the plan and the one that knows the future. He plans and guides our days, while simultaneously doing the same for everyone else that calls Him Lord. Many times though if we are not careful we can begin to view Him more as a boss instead of a companion or a friend though. Our view can become one where we follow His orders, but don’t feel that we are connected to Him. We can reach a point where we do not see that He is intimately involved in helping us to carry out those orders via His companionship or association with us.
As the first definition says above, a companion is a comrade or an associate. God is with you daily, He is our associate or friend in our lives. You probably know that in your head, but like me you may miss that in your heart some days.
I am sure there will be times you feel alone or isolated. You may even be with your friends and family when those times occur. There are simply times when no matter the surroundings, we feel alone. At those times we need a place where we feel at home and comfortable. That is when we really need a true friend. That link to home is God, and that is a amazing blessing. He is walking with you, He is sweating with you, He is watching for you, and He is protecting you. Your perfect friend, your perfect co-laborer, your perfect companion, and your perfect protector.
Look at the third definition of companion - one that is closely connected, one that is employed in living with another. What a definition of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is so closely connected and employed in living with us that He literally MOVES IN to us and takes control of our lives. You can not get more connected and employed then that. Our relationship with Christ is not limited to just one of salvation. That relationship is composed of a permanent investment by Him in us and a permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit to lead us until He returns . He gave all where we could have it all. His employment / work is caring and guiding us, what a concept. The creator of the universe is working to care for me, that is one of His jobs...WOW!!! What a companion, what a friend, what a Savior!!!
I just wanted to encourage you not to forget that even though the end of the earth may literarily be just one mountain further then where you will be next week you still have a companion that is there not to work for others, but for your personal benefit and support. As much as you are there serving Him, He is there serving you, and that makes the relationship ideal. Two parties not there for themselves, but there for the benefit of the other.
Remember no matter the situation or place if you are partnered with the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords, the Alpha to the Omega, the I am, there is nothing to worry about. What a mighty God we serve, what a mighty God we serve, He is the great I am!!!! Rejoice not just in your labor and your service, but also in your constant companion and associate.
