It seems to me that God in a way is like gutters during a hard rain. He removes damaging sin from our life and places it away from our foundation where it will not cause permanent damage like our home’s gutters take the flow of water away from our soffit’s, and reduce the erosion around our homes base. Without the removal of sin our lives are slowly eroded away and destroyed. Our lives begin to settle and crack like the foundation of a house with standing water around it’s foundation. Over time our sins begin to leak into parts of our life that they never were expected to affect like water leaking into basements and soffits. God’s removal of sin is vital for our continued health and survival like it is vital for our home’s gutters to work properly and remove water from where it could damage our homes. The key for God and for the gutters to both work correctly is for them to be free of obstruction. However, God’s removal of sin is not like our home’s gutter in one way though. In some areas due to leaf and environmental conditions homeowners place gutter guards over their gutters to keep large objects and debris from clogging up their gutters. This is very important to keep the gutters flowing free and allowing them to function properly. God is not like this. He does not need a protective guard to keep certain sin from being removed from our lives. In fact He requires us to bring ALL of our sins to Him, not just certain ones that fit certain requirements. The problem is that we personally install spiritual gutter guards in our life. We want forgiveness and we want the benefits of God being active in our life, but we want to keep certain sins from being eliminated from our life. We place guards in our life that allow the sins that are not that important too us to be removed, but we want to retain the sins that we like, the ones that mean the most too us, the ones that are the most entwined in our lives. This was not the purpose of Jesus’s death on the cross. He did not live, die, and rise to only pay the price for the sins that we did not want. He did for ALL our sins, and He also called us to die to ALL of our ways and be reborn as a new creation, with new goals, new motivation and new ways. Spiritual gutter guards prevent our full conversion, they keep part of our lives in our past. We all know that a house divided will not survive, and a life divided between our old sinful ways and our new Godly ways will not survive either. Today ask God if you have spiritual gutter guards in your life. If you do, ask God to help you remove them, and work to remove them. Living a Godly life is less about what we say, and more about what we do. Do what God is calling you too today. Follow Him completely, and be completely reborn in Christ. He is victorious and perfect. He knows what you need, and His ways are just, right and correct. Follow after Him today.
