Deep calls to deep at the sound of Thy waterfalls; All Thy breakers and Thy waves have rolled over me. Psalm 42:7 (NASB) Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts; all Thy waves and Thy billows are gone over me. Psalm 42:7 (KJV) When my soul is in the dumps, I rehearse everything I know of You, From Jordan depths to Herman heights, including Mount Mizar. Chaos calls to chaos, to the tune of whitewater rapids. Your breaking surf, Your thundering breakers crash and crush me. Psalm 42:6-7 (The Message)
This passage has always fascinated me so I felt compelled to search its meaning. Additional verses have helped me in drawing out a spiritual lesson for my life in these verses. Psalm 69:1-3 (NASB) Save me, O God, for the waters have threatened my life. I have sunk in deep mire, and there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, and a flood overflows me. I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail while I wait for my God. From these verses and the Psalm 42 passage, I draw the following: In the midst of being overwhelmed by life’s trials and circumstances, a deeper call within from the Holy Spirit is heard. He beckons me on that I might seek God in the turmoil and learn a deeper truth concerning His character. He desires that I walk a more intimate walk with my Savior as a result. As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for Thee, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God; when shall I come and appear before God? Psalm 42:1-2 (NASB) My soul thirsts for God…my soul knows its’ need…a deeper relationship, a unique intimacy with my Creator through His Son. This comes unexpectedly through deep waters! The Hebrew word for ‘deep’ has an interesting definition: “the main sea…or water supply.” My thoughts go to the woman at the well. John 4:1-26. Deep calls us to the One who supplies Living Water that we might never thirst again…to His vast supply of provision for our every need, circumstance, and trial. He is the “main sea…or water supply” for living water! He sent from on high, he took me; He drew me out of many waters. Psalm 18:16 (NASB) They have seen the works of the Lord, And His wonders in the deep. Psalm 107:24 (NASB) God draws the believer out of trials and difficult circumstances victoriously if we seek Him in the midst and obey. We can look back at the hard times and see how He has led us into a deeper walk with Himself. Then we can proclaim with the psalmist of “His wonders in the deep.”
