How can we be too busy to have a Quiet Time? I feel frustrated whenever I hear my fellow Christians request that I pray that they will have a few Quiet Times in the coming week. Spiritual laziness is accepted in too many Christian churches. I am disappointed by how few men spend time in the Word on a regular basis. I personally believe that a Christian man who begins his day without first reading the Bible is no different than a soldier who walks into heated battle with no bullets for his gun and no plan of defense. A spiritual war is constantly unfolding all around us whether we realize it or not. Ephesians 6:12 states, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Satan seeks to destroy us and our effective Christian witness. Having a Quiet Time every day keeps our focus on God and prepares us for the coming battle. How can we justify our failure to fellowship with our Creator? The most common excuse I hear for not reading the Bible is, “I’m just too busy……there is absolutely no room in my schedule.” I too have used this untruthful excuse on many occasions. Whenever I hear a friend say “I just didn’t have time,” I ask “Did you brush your teeth today?” After a minute or two of a confused look from my friend I follow up with “How many times will you brush your teeth today? …….you have the time.” Our teeth are temporal. Someday, our precious teeth will rot away at some point. Your reward for taking good care of your teeth is temporary. In contrast, our soul is eternal. If we allow God to use us, we can impact others with the love of Jesus Christ for eternal reward. Its amazing how almost all Christians (with the exception of our brethren in Alabama) spend so much time and effort taking care of teeth and then spend so little time taking care of our spirits. The next time you hear someone say, “I just don’t have time to read the Bible” challenge them to skip brushing their teeth until they spend at least ten minutes in the Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed handling accurately the word of truth.”
