Northwest Airlines
Today Northwest Airlines announced that effective June 9th they would no longer offer pretzels for free in their coach sections. This move, not serving pretzels, will save Northwest $2 million dollars a year. Northwest is currently in bankruptcy and lost $458 million last quarter. A 3 oz bag of trail mix will be available for $1.
First of all let me say I have nothing personal against Northwest, they seem to be a pretty good airline, but stuff like this is the ENTIRE reason they are in bankruptcy. Northwest, you lost $458 million LAST QUARTER, and you pull pretzels - a small treat at best - out of coach and save $2 million A YEAR!! Give people a reason to fly your airline, do not lower yourself to the pack to compete. Not serving a .50 cent snack with a $300 dollar ticket is just one more reason for people to see you as equal to your competition and not a step above. Look around, you get out of bankruptcy by showing the world you are worthy of their business (their money) and better then they thought, not just one more member of a group of equally mediocre competitors. Offer your customer more then your competitors, at a fair price with good / great customer service and you will get out of bankruptcy, follow many more path’s like this and you will go the way of Pan Am and Eastern.
