A Black Confederate? Interesting…
Duane at the Black Informant discusses H.K. Edgarton’s – a Afro American from Asheville, NC – march down old Maryville Pike yesterday – full post here with the Confederate flag . Mr Edgarton is a strong supporter of the Confederacy during the Civil War. Duane also links within his piece to some past posts he has made. This is a very interesting read on a topic that is rarely discussed – the roles of blacks in the Confederacy during the Civil War.
I personally heard H.K. for the second time on the Hallerin Hilton Hill show yesterday- link here -. being interviewed about this march. Hallerin is about as pleasant and fair as any host I have never found, but H.K. blasted Hallerin for being unfair. H.K. needs to be a bit more civil in his discourse if he wants his message to be considered.
In the end there is a place and time for Southern pride as the South does have a unique lifestyle and many GOOD people have Southern roots, but there must also be acknowledgment of the failures, travesties, and ABUSES of the past. There must also be the acceptance that the sight of the Confederate battle flag causes pain and anguish for many. In the end there needs to be a bit of compromise on both sides where the successes and uniqueness of the South can be celebrated, while acknowledging the mistakes of the South and the HORRIBLE history that slavery is. There must also be acceptance that some good and decent people do live in the South today, and that the modern south is not full of the bigots that were prominent in the past.

There is, of course, a long list of southern sins and they should never be forgotten. But the modern attacks on southern heritage is becoming a scape-goating campaign. You never hear from pc educators about the largest race riot in US history occuring in New York as the result of the draft in the summer of 1863. Or the fact that the three states with the highest KKK membership were the the loyal states that filled the Union Army of the Cumberland (Indiana Ohio and Illinois). What is also intersting is the concept of “diversity” has led to the removal of so much history instead of
adding new elements to existing history. The easy flag solution would be to use other confederate designs which were never hijacked by racial terrorist. As a Kentuckian I can speak of Jefferson Davis and Muhammed Ali in the same breath and not feel a bit of irony or shames.
