Narrative story

Milton over at Transforming Sermons has a excellent post (here) linking to Rusty Peterman about how the Bible should be viewed as more of a narritive story and not just a book of lists & topic studies.

That is a excellent point as we all seem to have a book or two that is nothing more then a collection of scriptures / verse lists for specific situations and times. I am sure we have all gone to books like that (which are good) to find the specific scriptures we want. The problem that causes is that though that works for a specific situation, but it causes us to miss the complete story or picture that the Bible is showing. To say that another way is to say we may read 4 or 5 verses and get a “feel” for what God says on a topic, but we do not read those verses in context and get the full picture of what the Bible is teaching us. The Bible really is HISSTORY and we need to look at it as the story of God, not just a book of lists & rules. Definately something to think about and consider as we dive into the word of God.

  1. The best lesson I’ve learned in Bible study is that the Bible isn’t a tool box for us to take out instruments and “apply them to our lives.” We don’t use the Bible — the Word uses us! Peace.
