Center for Bio-Ethical Reform at UT

[H/T to John Norris Brown for this one]

Crystal Humphrey, a UT sophomore, had a story is Monday’s (Oct 31st, 2005) Daily Beacon (the UT student paper) where she looks at the recent visit of Center for Bio-Ethical Reform to campus with their Genocide Awareness Project (GAP) display. This display shows real images of abortions and argues that the current abortion movement is akin to genocide.

This group and display have apparently visited the UT the last several years and is compromised of a wide range of people (married, single, medical professionals, etc.). Crystal discusses the groups arguments, as well as noting how the topic of abortion is a issue that brings out a response in all. As Crystal notes, even normally calm and logical fence sitters get excited when it comes to seeing abortion shown in this light. Crystal contends that this is due to the fact that the term abortion has become mentally sterile and clean due to the medical aspects of the procedure and the fact that the lady rarely sees the baby she aborted. Display’s like this move abortion from a clinical thing to a literal thing.

Crystal looks at this topic and the overall Center for Bio-Ethical Reform GAP project to discuss the underlying point of the display.

The approach of GAP cannot be taken at face value. In order to understand the main intention of the genocide comparison, one must dig deeper, hit the root of the word. At their cores, both genocide and abortion involve the denial that the subject being destroyed is a person.

I think that is the biggest point that people miss when they attack this project: How is personhood misinterpreted and abused in society?

She ends by noting how this group is treated differently then the others that bring displays and compares the reaction of their detractors to the ones of the display volunteers.

I would like to address all the people who called the group crazy, extremist, and a slew of other words implying aggressive and intimidating actions on their part. Have you noticed that they seem to be the only organization on campus that had to stand behind a metal fence? I’m not convinced this was to keep the “nutty zealots” away from defenseless passing students and teachers.

Did you also notice they never raised their voices or insulted protesters, even when some of them had the said protesters in their faces screaming profanity? Sadly, the ones who were insulting the volunteers were the “open-minded” ones. Go figure.

Interesting points and a interesting topic to read about. Give the full post a read and see what you think in the end. It may or may not effect your view of the issue, but it will give you something to think about. Full Story Here
