National Guard on the border

The rumor is that Bush will place some guard troops on the border in his speech this evening. I say rumor as nothing is set in Washington until it is announced or signed. Long and short IF W places National Guard troops on the border it will be the best move he will make to help is sagging popularity nationwide. Citizens, regardless of political views, overwhelmingly want the border closed and secure. All the polls I have seen show the number above 85%+ that I have seen. The question with the US citizens does not seem to be if the border needs to be closed or secured, but what should be done with the illegal workers that are already in the country.

Simply though, weather it helps the presidents numbers or not, securing the borders is the right thing to do. This not a right vs left, conservative vs liberal issue. Secure borders are important to everyone and this issue cuts across all the lines of society. This also a issue about national sovereignty and what law means. Illegal is illegal and laws are laws. Without a border there is no definable nation, and until we have a border that is at least being restricted we can not begin to ponder actual national security.

Das Kommisar from The Politburo Diktat has a different take on the issue though. Give his post a read here

LaShawn Barber seems to think this speech will be insulting to those that want to see the law enforced. She is probably right. Read her entire post why here
