Blu Ray & HD -DVD update

Well some experts are beginning to contend that due to the investments on both sides (Sony and Toshiba) on next generation DVD formats, and the concern of consumers to avoid a Betamaxesque decision, that neither side will win long term. The report by Screen Digest says the the battle will end in a stalemate and that by 2010 only 1/3 of the DVD market will come from new generation formats. The reports also contends that eventually a reasonable priced dual format player will develop and that is when people will adopt the new formats. They contend that the battling formats will become like DVD R- and DVD R+, basically a none issue as every player reads both and most DVD burners burn both. No one is contending that there will be dual format next gen DVD burners, but dual format players are very possible. Full story here, here, here, and here.

Personally I think this is report / idea is dead on. People are not going to sink $1,000 for a DVD player without movies or until they know that the format will survive. MOST (all you tech fiends I said MOST so NO emails) people do not care which format they use or buy. They just do not want to get stuck with a unsupported format. Most people do not know the benefits of one format or the other, and both formats do have benefits, they just want something to work and they want it simple.

People want things to work, they want the decisions to be simple, and they do not care how things work. Doubt me, discuss SATA vs IDE drives with a typical computer user. They do not care, they just want something to hold data.

  2. We hope you (and the report and us) are right as that would be great. It would make the move to next generation DVD’s alot easier more most.
