Knox County Police Retirement & Taxes

Well later today Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale will likely announce that all the residents of Knox County are in for a tax increase. PART of this tax increase is needed to fund the change in the police retirement fund that the voters approved last year. At the time the voters were told that a tax increase was possible / likely, though the police representatives seemed to down play the size of it throughout the campaign. The people of Knox County voted for it, and it won by a good margin, even though other municipalities are moving away from this model due to cost. Bottom line, if you live in Knox County do not start complaining now about the decision of the majority of this county’s voters. The voters spoke and they are now getting what they approved.

Be sure to remember this experience the next time someone in government (regardless of the topic) tells you that the tax increase will likely not be a big deal or will not happen. Government will always increase in size and power if the voters allow / approve it too, and a increase in government size and power will always take more money (i.e. taxes).
