Landis & Lemond
First things first. As long time reader of this blog know, I have not been a Greg Lemond fan for a while now, and not just because of his views on the Landis situation either. ( example post here) Regardless of that, this current stuff is not about cycling it is about a person and I will be praying for Greg. I HATED to hear that he had been molested as a child. I have always respected Lemond, even when I have disagreed with his actions or statements. It is amazing that Greg has remained silent about it so long, I hope that with the events of the past becoming known that Greg can heal completely (if he has not already). Again even though I have not been a big fan of Lemond’s actions over the last few years I respect him, and in this situation HE DID NOTHING WRONG. He testified to what he knew and he was threatened for attempting to do so. There is nothing redeeming in this threat, and Lemond did NOTHING to deserve this type of treatment. I will be praying for Greg Lemond and his healing. He is a tough tough man that deserves our respect, even when we disagree with some of his statements.
Now for the next part of this story, Floyd Landis and his team. Though I am fairly sure that Floyd did not know about the actions of his lawyer this is the dumbest move since Tonya Harding got Jeff Gillooly to hit Nancy Carrigan in the knee before the Olympic trails. Though I commend Floyd Landis for firing the guy IMMEDIATELY, Landis’s career is now over regardless of his involvement in the threat and regardless of the outcome of the case. Whether Landis doped or not is now a after thought. Landis, and his defense team, look like goons and this thing is over. Any evidence they bring will look weak compared to threatening a guy with outing childhood molestation. There is NO excuse for that, or for them.
So, fair well Floyd Landis your cycling days are behind you. IF, big IF, it turns out that you are found innocent of doping it will be unfortunate that you bankrupted yourself and destroyed your career to achieve a clean doping record. I personally hoped your career would end better then this, whether it was on or off the bike.
