Is the God of the Mountains, the God of the Suburbs?
[H/T to Milton Stanley at Transforming Sermons for this one]
Todd Hiestand ask that in his great post / piece about living as a missionary in the suburbs. Todd presented his work about two months ago at a Theology seminar. Don’t let that last fact put you off though as this is a not a piece thick in isms, but one that is full of hope and ideas. This is the kind of work that I think further the kingdom of God by taking the word out of the church and into the home / streets we live on. Christ would be about that. We must remember that wherever God plants us - be it our home, our work, our church, or anywhere else - we are there to grow and flower
We have a monumental challenge if we are going to contextualize the gospel and live as missional communities of faith throughout suburban America. We cannot flee. We cannot get out of here. This is where we live. This is where God has called us. And this “God-forsaken place” that we have been called to desperately needs the Church to stand up and be the Church. We need to be a Church that truly exists for the sake of others.
This is also the same thing (flowering where we are planted) we talked about a few days ago here.
