FCC 700 Mhz Ruling
Well the FCC made its decision about the 700Mhz spectrum auction and the rules that the winner has to follow yesterday. The FCC tried to go down the middle - given some nods to openness, but giving some nods to protecting the winner of the auctions exclusivity. I read a lot of the stories on the topic and at the end of the day I think there is little within the rules that will really change or impact the current state of exclusive branded / controlled communications. The FCC is requiring access to all machines, but it kept out a third pipe competitor to the current telco and cable companies. What is interesting though is if expansion of WiMAX and similar technologies may work around the limits of this ruling in the end. I don’t think Goggle will bid now, but time will tell.
